To immerse oneself in the vibrant cultural atmosphere of Mexico City is to enter a universe of colors, shapes and enchanting traditions. Among the most emblematic manifestations of the city's artistic panorama are the alebrijes, fantastic creatures that come to life through the ingenuity and skill of Mexican artisans.

Alebrijes are much more than striking figures; they are the representation of the imagination and craftsmanship of the people who make them. If alebrijes have caught your attention, in this article, we are going to tell you where they come from, what they mean and where you can find them in Mexico City. We will also tell you about a very special tradition: the parade of monumental alebrijes that the Museo de Arte Popular (Popular Art Museum) organizes every year.

What Are the Alebrijes?

Alebrijes are imaginary and colorful creatures of Mexican folklore. Traditionally made of papier-mâché, carved wood or cardboard, they feature fantastic shapes and bright colors, fusing elements of real animals with imaginative touches.

Considered symbols of Mexican creativity and craftsmanship, alebrijes capture the surreal essence of the country's art and have gained recognition both nationally and internationally, representing an integral part of Mexico's cultural identity.

Where to See Alebrijes in Mexico City?

If you want to enter the fascinating world of alebrijes in Mexico City, the Museo de Arte Popular (MAP) is the place to go. Monumental Alebrijes Parade in CDMX

Every year in October, Mexico City is filled with magic and color with the parade of monumental alebrijes organized by the Museo de Arte Popular. This is one of the great events held by the MAP and has already become a tradition loved by all, as it celebrates the imagination and handcrafted folklore of Mexico.

During the parade, the streets of the Historic Center come alive with gigantic alebrijes figures, some up to several meters high, which parade accompanied by music, dances and celebrations. The alebrijes are made by artisans from different parts of Mexico, such as Oaxaca, Puebla, Guanajuato and Hidalgo.

In 2024, the parade is scheduled for Saturday, October 19, starting at 12:00 noon in the Zocalo, and passing through 5 de Mayo, Juarez and Paseo de la Reforma streets to end at the Angel of Independence. See you here?

In previous years, after the parade, the alebrijes remain on display on Paseo de la Reforma so that more people can admire them. We hope it will be the same again this year.
